FAQs

  • What are the phone and technology guidelines?

For the first seven days of the semester, Gappers are completely without phones or computers. This is intentional - we want to support you to get to know each other and settling in. After orientation week, we have a conversation about device agreements and etiquette, which the group will have a chance to create themselves. There are never any phones around during programming time or on wilderness trips.

  • Do I have to be in good shape for backpacking and canoeing trips?

While you do need to be capable of our Essential Eligibility Requirements (see our Resources and Policies), you do not need to be in extraordinarily good physical shape! Going for some hikes with a loaded backpack before arriving is a great way to build some stamina. Our motto is “challenge by choice”: everyone gets to figure out where their own challenge (and growth) zone is. Our trips are designed to be scalable for all levels of outdoor experience.

  • What's the weather there like in the fall?

Between early September and mid November, we get the full range of seasons! It can go from hot, summer weather (perfect for swimming in Glen Brook’s lake), to snow, and everything in between. In general, expect chilly nights around 30-40 degrees, and sunny days between 45-65, but be ready for anything.

  • Do Gappers interact with the school programs and other year-round residents of Glen Brook?

Yes! While Gap itself is a small program, we are nestled within a thriving outdoor and farm education center. Sometimes we’ll share meals and activities like singing or field games with visiting school programs and residents. Our year-round staff - the Farm Manager, Culinary Director, and others - teach within Gap in addition to Glen Brook’s other programs. Because there are children on-site, we expect Gappers to be positive role models and respect the space of all of our visitors.

  • How big is Gap at Glen Brook?

We are small by design. Each cohort is between 6-15 participants, with 2-3 core staff, and additional instructors from the year-round staff.

  • Can I or my family use 529 Funds to pay for Gap?

You are welcome to use 529 Funds to pay for your course registration fee, as well as for any portion of the semester enrollment fee.
