Week 5 & 6 - Apprenticeships

Weeks 5- 6

Apprenticeships are in full swing here at Glenbrook. Last week, we split into two groups. One focused on the farm and one focused on fiber arts. The farm apprenticeship started by picking popcorn, then sorting it, and leaving it in the hay loft to dry. On Tuesday we learnt how to slaughter and process chickens. Then we worked in the field with carrots, green onion, and beets, which we cleaned up at the washpack. The fiber arts apprenticeship learnt how to spin wool into yarn. They then picked marigolds from the dye garden and turned the wool into a bright yellow. Gappers started learning how to weave and got to take home the big loom.

This week people switched around. Fiber arts was replaced with Outdoor Education and Farm was more focused on herbal medicine. We learned about various plants and their medicinal properties.

We got creative in the kitchen this week with meal highlights such as “Peasant Stew” and pizza. We first had to start experimenting when we learnt we had forgotten to get corn. This resulted in corn-less chowder that had some other missing ingredients and evolved into a soup, affectionately nick-named “Peasant Stew.” Then, we realized we didn’t make enough alfredo sauce for chicken alfredo.  But Freya worked some magic and delivered the perfect amount of alfredo- adjacent chicken.
