How Do We Do That?

1. By Learning the Art of Personal Responsibility

 

Working on the world begins with working on ourselves. How can we treat others—human and non-human—with respect if we first don't treat ourselves with respect?  The Art of Personal Responsibility is the wild and transformative art of remembering, over and over, in each mundane or tremendous moment, your significance.

 

2. By Sustaining That Which Sustains Us

 

Our lives are sustained by a deeply relational web: to our friends and families, to the laborers that build the things we use, to the land and waters from which our food grows.  Stewardship is the primary way that we understand viscerally all that we are connected to. Through the work of our bodies and our hands, we can learn to see our selves as made up of the world—and in turn see our role in making up the world.

 

3. By Delving into Our Wild Human Nature

 

We are responsible to the more-than-human world; we don't own it, we owe it.  In understanding our physical, functional relationship to the wild world—food, water, air, shelter— we also begin reckoning with our wholeness as human beings, and where our wholeness has been compromised.  Our human nature is reflected in wild nature; it's how we evolved, after all.

Authenticity

Authenticity is the ability to stand and deliver our true self as it is in that moment.  To keep your word, to feel your feelings.  Who are you in your true nature?  You may not know yet, but an authentic search is just as good—if not better—than knowing. 

Wonder

Every good question starts with wondering, and real wonder should survive the answer.  So much of what we do and how we are—exploring outer and inner landscapes, thinking creatively, enjoying our adventures, appreciating good food—starts with wonder.  Don't let Wikipedia kill yours!

Dignity

The old meaning of "dignity" also means "privilege," which indicates that, though our inherent worth need not be earned, it must be continuously cultivated—it is ours to forget.  We work to see the dignity in our selves so that we can see and respect it in our friends, our community, and the dignity manifest in the wild world.

 

Acknowledging What We See:

We recognize that we share a troubled world dominated by a narrative of interpenetrating historical systems and institutions
that silence, oppress, and exploit myriad beings on this planet.  

We acknowledge that we—as white, cis-gender, able-bodied individuals; and in particular as members of the industries of outdoor education, experiential education, and gap years—benefit disproportionately from these culturally-determined stories.  

The more we learn about these stories, the more we find grief alongside our wonder.  This grief, in many ways, is our starting point as educators.  
It fuels our personal and professional dedication to whole-person education, to becoming evolving agents of reconciliation and wholeness in this divided and suffering world.

Jake Lewis - Founder, Director

Jake began developing Gap at Glen Brook in 2014, and launched the program in fall of 2015.  Jake also worked 4 consecutive summers as Glen Brook's Outdoor Adventure Program leader, and enjoys nothing more than sharing the New England wilds with people.  These days it's all-gap-all-the-time, but prior to start of the program he helped to launch the Pasadena Waldorf High School in Los Angeles, California.  As High School Assistant Director, he prepared for the school's opening and then worked on a variety of projects, including outreach, curriculum development, and schedule planning.  He also coordinated the high school's trips program, bringing classes to amazing wilderness areas in Southern California.  A Bates College graduate with an Environmental Philosophy major, he loves to travel near and far and has visited various parks, cities, and surf breaks around the U.S., Europe, and South America.

Alison Sever - Assistant Director, Program Co-Leader

Alison is a native New Englander, having grown up in Massachusetts with roots in the mountains of Maine. After graduating from the University of Vermont, she spent several years leading, designing, and developing transformative education programs for groups of high school and gap year students in Central America, South America, and East Africa. Coming home to New England to facilitate place-based programming at Glen Brook was an important shift towards a more rooted and community-oriented lifestyle and vision. A certified yoga instructor (RYT-200, Sadhana Yoga School), Alison is eager to share what she is learning about how the nonviolent, reciprocal, and intuitive principles of yoga philosophy relate to coming of age in today's world. In nature is where she feels at home, and she loves to hike, mountain bike, ski, surf, and bask in its awesomeness.

Taylor Westbrook - Culinary Director

Taylor studied Tourism at Arizona State University. Upon graduating he focused his interests towards cooking, travel, and community. Over the past four years he has traveled the U.S and the globe cooking at eco-retreat centers, farm-to-table kitchens, and off-the grid sites. In 2016, he completed a certificate program at Cook Street Culinary School in Denver, Colorado. He’s inspired by being closer to the source of food and connecting the farm to the fork. His travels have taken him to Northern California at a Eco-retreat farm cooking for an array of nature lovers and food enthusiasts. He has volunteered his hands on an off-grid permaculture farm and a kitchen in Costa Rica. He recently volunteered at Standing Rocks Rosebud camp. Last year he was at Mayfair Farms, a local farm-to-table initiative in Harrisville, NH. 

Food has been a compass for Taylor, navigating him into lush gardens, like minded communities, and a closer connection with nature. Taylor feels cooking is the best way he can be of service and it’s his gift that he loves to offer to the global tribe.

Sadie

Sadie Marshall - Farm Director

Sadie grew up in Minneapolis and attended a Montessori school that owned a large organic farm in Wisconsin. The seeds of her love of farming were sown at this 'land school' through many trips during her elementary years, and a summer during college when she worked on the farm's CSA. She graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts with a concentration in creative writing and organic agriculture. During her college years, she worked on farms in California, Alaska, Wisconsin, and Ireland, and wrote about those communities.

She spent a year at the John C. Campbell Folk School in the mountains of North Carolina. While working in the gardens, she also took classes in blacksmithing, using natural dyes, spinning, weaving, quilting, folk dancing, wood-working, and cheese-making. She loves to make music, grow food, and laugh.

Sadie comes to us most recently from the Orchard Hill community where she grew an acre of vegetables, co-managed a pastured meat CSA, and worked at the Breadworks wood-fired baking operation. Sadie is thrilled to bring her skills and excitement to the farm at Camp Glen Brook.

GRANT BUTLER - FACILITIES DIRECTOR


Grant, a 1985 graduate of the Waldorf School of Garden City, NY, has been a camper, counselor, and staff member intermittently at Camp Glen Brook for over 30 years. He earned his bachelor’s in geography from the University of New Hampshire and worked as a stage production carpenter and residential contractor before achieving his master’s degree in Waldorf education at Sunbridge College. Subsequently, he and his wife moved to Pennsylvania where he taught first through fourth grade at the Waldorf School of Philadelphia. As facilities director at Camp Glen Brook, Grant brings enthusiasm for the work projects as a way to teach students self-reliance and community-building values.

MARK STEHLIK - Summer Camp DIRECTOR & School Programs Director


A cum laude graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, Mark majored in philosophy with a focus on ethics and morality, which speak to the very heart of summer camp living.  While at Bates he was a leader in many clubs and acted as an outing club expedition leader. He was recipient of the Barlow Enrichment Grant for travel in India, and is a student in the Kamana Naturalist Program for naturalist skills and wilderness awareness.  Mark came to us most recently from the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, Maine, where he was an outdoor educator.  Mark maintains a regular yoga and meditation practice, which he cites as a source of his boundless energy, enthusiasm, and patience.  Mark is always looking forward to his next opportunity to share these joys and skills with students, campers, and gappers.

Shelley Goguen Hulbert - Executive Director


Shelley comes to Camp Glen Brook from nearby Peterborough, New Hampshire, where she and her family have resided on their small, diversified biodynamic farm since 1984.  Shelley holds a masters degree in social work from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a certificate in Biodynamic Agriculture from the Pfeiffer Center at Sunbridge College. She brings a great diversity of relevant work experiences to her leadership at Camp Glen Brook, including camp directing, management training, clinical social work, community organizing, fundraising, sustainable development and biodynamic farming. She was co-founder and Executive Director of Nubanusit Neighborhood and Farm, a socially and environmentally sustainable intentional community in Peterborough, New Hampshire and served, most recently, as Interim Executive Director of The Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics.

Camp Glen Brook has been weaving Waldorf education and traditional New England camping together since 1946, creating an on-going community that values creativity, compassion, and stewardship.  Our 250-acre forest-and-farm facility is home to school programs, family weekends, our vibrant summer and winter camps, and Gap at Glen Brook.
